Moonflower Room: A Poetic Cookbook from The Bahamas

The Moonflower Room was a temporary dining club that I created in Nassau, The Bahamas, as part of a research artist residency at the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas' 8th National Exhibition. This cookbook includes plant-based recipes from that unique space, Bahamian food fantasies, and poetry.

All of the meals were derived from local ingredients that were available in Nassau in December of 2016. The recipes required a level of creativity, as many crops and even entire farms were destroyed following Hurricane Matthew, which hit two months before.

The poetry was both part of my data analysis method and a means by which to align my research with Caribbean cultural paradigms, especially as they relate to creolization, cultural development, and cultural emergence. It moves fluidly between opinions, experiences, and data about food, health, and sustainability in food systems in The Bahamas.

The intention behind the space was to hold personal and collective shadows and, simultaneously, express desires and dreams embedded in stories of food, healing, restoration and consciousness shared by individuals I interviewed as part of my doctoral dissertation research.
