No details as to what this team was supposed to look for, nor what it might have found, have ever emerged. Less than a year later, Napoleon sold the territory to the United States in what is probably the best bargain in history. The subsequent Lewis & Clark Expedition revealed curious sights, ancient ruins, mingled with the native's stories of mysterious cultures.
