The Island of Shelbie Mott

It's the summer of '91 and Bahamian tomboy, Shelbie Mott, is secretly in love with Johnny Ingraham, a boy so handsome that even the "Queen of England would knight him just based off his looks." Unfortunately, Johnny is head-over-heels for Ricara, the green-eyed girl next door. The feeling of unrequited love upsets Shelbie but in no way tempers her daring attitude and growing enthusiasm for a summer of adventure with the boys.

Together, she and her gang of "pirates" and "soldiers" explore the complexities of a world made up of domineering parents, rock fights, unwanted crushes, and preposterous chores. Each challenge presented inspires Shelbie to uncover a deep-seated strength, but it's the reality of possibly losing her first love that threatens to mar the beauty of summer forever.
